Covers and pictures

What a scene's cover is, when the studio takes it, and the picture, GIF, video and scene package a share page can hand out.

A cover is the small picture that stands for a scene: on its tile in the library, on a link's card when it unfurls, and on your creator page. A share page can also hand a visitor a picture, a GIF, a video or a scene package of the scene.

Open in Puni and choose a scene to make a picture or share link.

#Covers

The studio takes the cover from the stage when it saves, so the cover shows the saved scene. A cover records the document hash it was taken from; when the two differ the tile shows the last good cover.

A browser that cannot draw 3D cannot take a cover. The studio says so and keeps the previous one. On a deployment with a render worker it asks the worker to draw the cover from the saved document instead.

From the command line:

bash
puni project cover-get PROJECT_ID --output cover.png --asset-origin https://storage.example.com --base-url https://puni.design --json
puni project cover-set PROJECT_ID --file cover.png --document-hash SAVED_SHA256 --base-url https://puni.design --json

A cover you set must be a PNG of at most 2 MiB and at most 1024 pixels on a side, and it must name the saved document it depicts.

#Pictures from a share page

The Save item in a share page's scene menu (the scene's name at the top) offers:

ItemWhat it is
PictureA PNG of the frame on screen
GIFUp to the first twenty seconds, encoded in the browser
VideoA browser recording, MP4 or WebM according to support
SceneEditable scene files, shown only when the link allows remixing

GIF encoding and Video recording happen in the visitor's browser. Video needs the browser's MediaRecorder and canvas recording support; a failure leaves the other downloads available. Video captures the canvas and does not include scene sound. Use Film for motion with sound.

#Unfurls

A link carries a title, a short description and its cover, so chat apps and social sites show a card. Keep the card simple: the cover does the work.

Read Sharing for making a link, or Rendering for a bigger, finer still.
